: Ethan : 6. Chosen

6. Chosen

Published 6 months ago 607 words (2 minutes)

Ethan hears a voice speaking to him. He can't make out any of the words, but is still filled with meaning and purpose. He is one of the chosen — but he can still go his own way. His purpose is still yet to be revealed, but he and his animon companion are critical to the survival of both Earth and the Animon World. He doesn't need to be part of the group to still make an impact for the greater good, but he doesn't need to push them away, either. They can be separate allies.

Ethan comes back to his senses lying flat on his back, next to Swampy who is breathing heavily, and leaking motes of light from their side. He puts a hand on his animon companion. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I'm fine. I just...need to take a breather." Swampy responds.

Emma walks over to him and looks down at him. "Well? Did you feel it too?"

"Did you...?" Ethan started to ask, but Emma shook her head.

"Your emotional journey, your vision. I didn't see what you saw, but it's happened to me before too. It helps you think through the issues you're having sometimes. Did it make you come to your senses about joining us as one of the chosen?" She smiled at him.

Ethan thought for a moment before responding. "Kind of." He stood up and looked at a confused Emma. "I'm not joining you. But...I was too harsh before. I'm sorry, Emma. whatever that voice was, it was right about a couple things. I can go my own way without being one of you, but still helping our two worlds. Like those lines that don't intersect but go the same direction, um..."

"Parallel lines," Swampy supplied.

"Yeah, those. So, I guess I'm agreeing to being a chosen, but not one of the chosen. If that makes sense." He looked into Emma's eyes, and she looked sad, but understanding.

"I get it. This is something you have to do. That's...okay. But I'll get you to join the club someday." She smiled at him, and for once Ethan smiled back.

"Alright, now that's one down, we still have one to go." Ethan straightened up and looked down at Swampy. "Are you gonna be okay for another one of these fights?"

Emma shook her head. "You already did yours, you can go back to Earth now. Slapshot and I can—"

"You said we were in this together, right? I'm not going to leave you on your own when we came in here together." Ethan said, then realized how cringey he was sounding. He looked down. "If...if that's okay with you, I mean."

Emma's expression lit up. "Yes! Let's do it together, then!" She grasped his wrist and made off into the jungle, with Slapshot and Swampy laughing behind them.
