Setup
The setting is a grim, frontier wilderness. Settlements are sparse. This particular settlement is called Darkwell, so-called because of the ancient stone well that sits in the middle of the village. No one knows who built it, or what the remnants of stairs were for that lead down the inside of the well in an ominous spiral.
Our protagonist is Finn of Darkwell, a stout man of middle years. He has a crude mace made from an oak cudgel, with bits of scrap iron hammered into the head. It dangles from a leather strap at his waist. He also wears a leather cap and jerkin, hardened into an effective armor.
Finn has little patience for people, but despite that he feels a strong sense of community and desires to keep his community safe.
The setting is fertile ground for those who seek power. One such---a warlord of no small reputation---came through the area some months prior, while Finn was hunting, and pressed a handful of men into his army. They were long gone by the time Finn returned. He has promised to get the men back, somehow.
He has a single bond, and it is with Darkwell village and its inhabitants.
